Apple released iOS 15.4 for everyone after just over a month in beta. The update is quite significant for many users because, finally, it will be possible to unlock certain iPhones with Face ID while wearing a mask.
In addition, iOS 15.4 arrives in time to receive the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro in green. Although booking for these started the previous week, it will be next Friday that buyers will start receiving their devices.
It is however important to mention that the arrival of iOS 15.4 does not mean that all iPhones with Face ID will be able to be unlocked by wearing a mask. Unfortunately, this feature will be limit terminals of the two most recent generations. It’s the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 —and their respective Pro variants, of course—.
Although Apple has not explained the exact reasons for this decision, it is very likely that it is due to a technical limitation of the processor of the previous models. The complete list of iPhones compatible with this function, below:
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPad Pro 5th Generation
If you have one of these devices, keep in mind that face mask unlock will not be enabled by default. So, you have to enable it manually in the settings.
To do this, simply go to the section Face identification and code and activate the option Use Face ID with a mask. Later, iOS 15.4 will warn you that the system works better when showing your full face:
“Face ID is most accurate when set to only recognize the full face. To use Face ID while wearing a mask, iPhone can recognize unique features around the eye area to authenticate itself.”
Universal Control comes to iPad and Mac
iOS 15.4 was not the only novelty of the day. Apple also released iPad OS 15.4, which finally adds support for Universal Control. We are talking about the proposal presented at WWDC 2021 that allows Simultaneously control an iPad and Mac with just one keyboard and mouse. But beyond moving the pointer between screens on the device, it’s also possible to move files. Another example of the great integration that exists in the apple ecosystem.
iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 can now be downloaded. Please note that the update will appear throughout the day on supported devices.
