How to Change Folder Color, Icons and Background in Windows 11/10 (and File Explorer+ Appearance)

New Icons!Hello computer!

This note will be relatively small: about customizing the appearance of folders in Windows 11 (10) – their background, and icons (see screenshot below 👇). Also, most of the utilities that let you customize folder design in Windows XP/7 don’t work in the modern 11th OS…

Someone look at these “decorations” with great skepticism, however, if there are a lot of folders in the documents (or on the desktop), then coloring them in different colors (or by changing the icons) – you can significantly simplify and speed up the search for the necessary directories (after all, even a quick glance – you can quickly find the desired directory!). Agree conveniently? Yes, and useful in office work!👌

By the way, this note is recommended as an addition to the instructions for designing and customizing Windows design – 📌https://ocomp.info/izmenit-oformlenie-win.html

Customizing Folder Appearance

Background (as an image and filled with color)

Option 1

I want to start this article with a utility QTTabBar. She yavl. a kind of add-on for Windows 10/11, which allows you to extend the capabilities of Explorer and customize its color scheme yourself! Of course, you can also change the background of the folder (which, by the way, is very useful when the white background “stinks” into the eyes…).

*

📌QTTabBar

Official website: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ (for Windows 11 – carefully see the description, there are several links on the official site).

Important: after installing QTTabBar – restart your computer!

*

1) If QTTabBar is already installed on your PC, then opening any folder you will see in the top menu appear. tabs (like in a browser). Try next, right click and open QTTabBar Options (or combination Alt+O).

RMB - Alt + O - open QTTabBar settings

RMB – Alt + O – open QTTabBar settings

2) In QTTabBar settings (to change folder background) you need to go to section “Display of compatible folders” and enable styles (the box next to the item “Compatible List View Style”). Don’t forget to click “To apply”.

3) Then in the same section (“Display of compatible folders”) you need to open a tab “Watermark” and specify background images for different folders: general, documents, images, etc. Click again on “To apply”.

4) In addition to the background of the folder – I recommend changing the color of the text (filenames); background on which it will be displayed; borders. You can do this in the tab Appearance / Display of folders – see screen below. 👇

5) Actually, now when you go to any folder, you will see that its background has changed (and the color of the filenames), see the example below 👇. Of course, this is all configured for yourself (under your monitor)!

6) By the way, if “white” menu on the left in the explorer also want to change – open the tab Appearance/Navigation Panel and check the box background color – by clicking now on “Choose the color” You can choose the sidebar fill color.

7) By the way, QTTabBar allows you to change folder icons – tab “groups” 👇 (although for this I would recommend using the more convenient Folder Paint utility, more on that below).

8) Also note that QTTabBar lets you assign hotkeys for many standard operations + enable sounds for a number of operations (e.g. copy something to clipboard – a bell rings.. . Practice ?!).

Option 2

By the way, you can also reduce the amount of white light by setting the design dark in Windows – i.e. instead of White the folder background will be dark (the method is good at least because you don’t need to install third party software).

To do this, just open the operating system settings and in the tab “Customization / Colors” set the desired option… See the example below. 👇

📌 And one more note…

If you work with folders and files a lot, I can’t help but recommend Total Commander (it’s a good file manager and a good alternative to File Explorer). Of course, in its settings you can set colors for panels, files, selections and other things. 👇

Icons, colors

To replace the standard icons of some folders with something different, it is quite convenient to use the 📌Folder Painter utility (this practice helps a lot at home and in the office – you instantly find the desired directory!).

Let’s briefly see how to use it.

*

1) After launching Folder Painter – in the left menu you need to select the icon sets to install and click on the button “To install”.

Adjusting icons in the menu

2) Now if you right click on a folder a tab will appear in the context menu “Change folder icon” – you can choose the one you need!

3) If the icon did not change immediately, you need to restart the explorer (or reopen the desired folder).

To note: to restart explorer – open command prompt as administrator and use command: taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe & start explorer

4) See some screenshots below – “was/became”. I think it’s pretty obvious! 😉
