Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher) is the standard in digital office software. It set the precedent for what organization and presentation software should be and remains the suite of software you need most for basic IT and business tasks.
Unfortunately, it is now also very expensive, but we know several ways to get Microsoft Office for free. In recent years, instead of letting people buy Office once on CD or digital download, Microsoft has moved Office programs to a subscription service called Office 365.
You can also buy Word, Excel and PowerPoint for a single purchase, but it doesn’t come with additional services like cloud storage or other programs in the suite.
Neither option is cheap, but Microsoft Office is the one collection of software every computer should have, if only to be able to open the most common file formats. Luckily, there are ways to get the suite for free, and you can download Microsoft’s Word for free so you can use it without a hitch, you can also download Excel for Windows and complete the office duo.
Sign up for a one month free trial
If you only need Microsoft Office for a short time, you can sign up for a one-month free trial. To find this offer, head to Microsoft’s free Try Office website and sign up for the trial.
You’ll need to provide a credit card to sign up for the trial, and it will automatically renew after the month. However, you can unsubscribe at any time, including right after signing up, to ensure you’re not charged. You can continue to use Office for the remainder of your free month after cancellation.
After joining the trial, you can download the full versions of these Microsoft Office apps for Windows PC and Mac. You’ll also have access to full versions of apps on other platforms, including larger iPads.
This trial will give you full access to a Microsoft 365 Family (formerly Office 365) plan. You’ll get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and 1TB of OneDrive storage. You can share it with up to five other people. You’ll each have access to apps through your Microsoft account, and you’ll have your own 1TB storage for a combined storage of 6TB.
Microsoft also offers 30-day free trials of Office 365 ProPlus, aimed at businesses. You may be able to take advantage of both offers for two months of free access to Microsoft Office.
Get Office for free as a student or teacher
Many educational institutions pay for Office 365 plans, which allow students and teachers to download the software for free.
To find out if your school is participating, go to the Office 365 Education website and enter your school’s email address. You will be offered a free download if it is available through your school plan.
Even if a university or college isn’t participating, they can offer Microsoft Office at a reduced cost to students and teachers through their bookstore. Check with your educational institution, or at least check their website, for more details.
Try mobile apps
Microsoft’s Office apps are also free on smartphones. On an iPhone or Android phone, you can download Office mobile apps to open, create, and edit documents for free.
On an iPad or Android tablet, these apps will only allow you to create and edit documents if you have a “device with a screen size less than 10.1 inches”. On a larger tablet, you can install these apps to view documents, but you’ll need a paid subscription to create and edit them.
In practice, that means Word, Excel, and PowerPoint offer the full experience for free on iPad Mini and older 9.7-inch iPads. You’ll need a paid subscription to get document editing features on an iPad Pro or newer 10.2-inch iPads.
Live Desktop It was designed as a web space where users can save, access and share any type of document.
Its power lies in its tight integration with Office 2003 or 2007 applications for XP or Vista, eliminating the need to email out-of-control documents or carry them on a portable storage device. Centrally and under excellent version control, we will be able to have all our files available simply by accessing the Internet.
