When fixing some computer problems, you simply cannot do without a BIOS / UEFI update. Most often, this may be necessary in the following cases:
- you bought a new processor (disk, video card, etc.), but the card does not see it;
- there are bugs in the current firmware version that have been fixed in the latest one;
- in the updated version of UEFI / BIOS appeared additional. options to make your work on your PC faster and more convenient. 👌
In general, in this short note, I decided to give a step-by-step example of updating UEFI on ASRock cards (which have become very popular lately).
The note is designed for a novice user, all actions are supported by screenshots and photos. I can’t help but notice that some of your menus may differ slightly from mine. (depending on board model and firmware version).

It’s probably obvious, but I can’t help but recommend clarifying the current version of UEFI. It’s best to do this directly in the BIOS/UEFI menu itself. (as a rule, this information is displayed on the main “Main” page).

STEP 2: Download the correct UEFI/BIOS version
Now we have just introduced the carpet model. panels in the Google / Yandex search line and one of the first search results will be the official website of the manufacturer (we need it …).
The list of BIOS firmware is usually on a separate page – you need to open the ASRock section “Specification/BIOS” (example below 👇).
Then, as a general rule, you should download a couple of the latest BIOS versions (in my case, it’s 3.30 and 3.70).
Important: pay attention to the description of each BIOS version – in some cases important details may be indicated there (for example, the sequence of updates – it is not always possible to immediately install the latest firmware version!).
STEP 3: Preparing the flash drive
To update the UEFI, we need a USB key. Suitable for almost all…

Important point: the file system must be selected FAT32 (NTFS may be invisible…).
To note: When formatting, all data on the drive / flash drive will be deleted!
After that, you need to copy the downloaded firmware files to the USB flash drive (if they are in the archive, of course, they need to be unzipped). Example below 👇.
To note: it is better to burn several firmwares at once (so that if something happens, you can roll back to an older one…).
STEP 4: update process
If you have an uninterruptible power supply, I recommend connecting it to a PC before updating the BIOS/UEFI. If not, at least start the process when you don’t expect a power outage (better in the evening, when the neighbors don’t think about making repairs and operating drill hammers, welding, etc. 👌).
Sofirst go to BIOS / UEFI, go to the section “Tool” and choose the option “Instant Flash” – a window should automatically appear with all firmware versions found on the flash drive. You need to select one and click the button “update”. 👇
Then confirm the intention by clicking on “Yes”.
The update process should start: during this time, do not press any key on the keyboard and do not turn off the PC. Usually firmware update takes 2-5 minutes. (depending on board model and firmware version).
Once the update is complete, a small window will appear asking you to click on the button “Enter” to restart the system.
In fact, when you enter UEFI again, you will notice that the version has changed to a newer version (the card has now started supporting new hardware and additional functions).
STEP 5: what to do if the update fails
In general, there are two main dangers when upgrading:
- power failure (in the absence of an inverter);
- selection of an inappropriate firmware version (for example, if the model of the motherboard is incorrectly determined or the firmware is downloaded from an unofficial site).
Yes at the very least (albeit with errors), but the PC boots and you can enter the BIOS – run the firmware update again (select only a different version, for example).
Yes The PC does not react in any way and does not turn on – first try to remove the battery from the mat. board and wait 2-3 minutes. (of course, the PC must be disconnected from the mains… 👌).
Then reconnect the battery and turn on the PC – if it stops responding, the board needs to be taken to a service center. There they will be able to flash the BIOS on the programmer (the operation is not very complicated and usually not expensive…).
