The Realityscan app captures images of an object from multiple angles, then processes them to create a 3D object you can use in your projects.
RealityScan is based on RealityCapture, a powerful photogrammetry software that generates faithful representations of an object or texture. The technique is widely used by game development and special effects studios, although it requires having a good camera and following specific steps to get a better capture.
The application uses the same principle of taking multiple photos but in a more straightforward way to democratize the creation of 3D objects. Reality analysis guides users through augmented reality and interactive feedback. After capturing the images, they are processed, and a template is generated, which can be published or sold on SketchFab.
The result, available on SketchFab, is a detailed model of nearly 100,000 triangles that looks decent enough to use in a game or architectural project.
RealityScan App is part of a larger strategy by Epic Games and its subsidiaries.
RealityScan was developed by Capture Reality and Quixel, two companies owned by Epic Games dedicated to surface scanning. While the first compete for head-on with Agisoft for the throne of the best photogrammetry software, the second is the leader ina the sale of assets scanned, thanks to his shop Megascans.
Although Epic aims to bridge the gap between an ordinary person and a professional who captures photos with a DSLR or drone, the objective goes further. The company used all of its subsidiaries to create a pipeline to keep you in its ecosystem of products.
‘Stay in our ecosystem; everything is simpler and free.’
To share or sell, you can scan the objects into RealityScan and upload the models to SketchFab (owned by Epic). The 3D model can integrate into Unreal Engine and combine with the Megascans library’s other elements.
RealityScan App is to photogrammetry what Live Link Face is to capture facial expressions. Both applications seek to facilitate the technical process, but the end goal is to stay in our ecosystem. We could say the same about MetaHuman Creator, another application to create digital characters and integrate them into the Unreal Engine.
Epic has announced that RealityScan is available in a limited beta for 10,000 users via TestFlight. With the places being exhausted, it will be necessary to wait a few months so that early access for more people on iOS.
