Will Smith refused to leave the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock

After the scandal caused by Will Smith and Chris Rock in the ninety-fourth installment of the Oscars, finally the Academy spoke beyond the brief statement that condemned the violence. This time, however, the organization is sharing previously unknown details about the facts, including one in particular that leaves Will Smith in a bad light – as if physical assault alone isn’t enough.

More specifically, the Academy states that asked Will Smith to leave the Dolby Theater after assaulting Chris Rock. However, the actor refused. Much of the criticism against the Academy was due to the fact that their reaction to the gala was virtually nil. Smith even stayed until the very end, which earned him the Oscar for “Best Actor”. However, we now know that they did something about it.

“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and declined, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently. .

In his new declaration, moreover, Academy apologizes to Chris Rockas well as all the participants and millions of viewers who had to go through a moment full of confusion and discomfort.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Academy Awards were a deeply shocking and traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your endurance at this time. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during what should have been a celebratory event.”

The organization clarifies that “inappropriate physical contact, as well as abusive or threatening behavior that compromises the integrity of the Academy”, violates its standards of conduct. For this reason, the organizers of the Oscars also analyze the case carefully before issuing a possible sanction. Will Smith, for his part, has 15 days to provide written explanations for his actions..

Surprisingly, yes, they didn’t mention anything about Rock’s unfortunate “prank”, which involved Jada Pinkett Smith and started it all.

Once the conclusions of the two parties have been studied, the Academy will make a decision on April 18. Of course, from this moment they do not exclude that Will Smith will be definitively expelled from the organization. “At the next board meeting on April 18, the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions authorized by law and rules of conduct,” they warn.

According to Variety, the directors of the Academy are “outraged” because they are aware that the slap has made the awards take a back seat. Certainly, from the event, the conversation focused on the figures of Will Smith and Chris Rock, leaving aside the usual public debate that exists for the chosen winners. So this scandal still has many chapters to tell. April will be the key to knowing what will be the fate of the actor.
